Tallahassee, Fla. • There will be no deep run in the NCAA College Cup tournament for the BYU women's soccer team this year.
Despite controlling the action for most of the match, the Cougars fell 2-1 to Colorado on Thursday in a second-round match at Seminole Soccer Field on the campus of Florida State University.
The No. 19 Cougars gave up two goals in the first half and clawed back with a goal by Niki Fernandes in the 58th minute, but could never get the equalizer even though they out-shot the Buffaloes 17-11.
"In the second half, we had some chances, but we just couldn't get a clean look," said BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I thought were going to tie it up with the momentum going our way."
Rachel Manning had the assist on Fernandes' score.
Colorado (14-6-2) advances to play the winner of the late Florida State-Ole Miss match, while BYU (15-5-1) saw its eight-match winning streak snapped.
"I think we exceeded expectations this year," Rockwood said. "Especially after what we were able to accomplish this year. I am really proud of the team."
The Cougars tied for the West Coast Conference championship with Santa Clara and Portland, and then beat Weber State 4-0 last week in a first-round NCAA match. —
