Provo • Cody Hoffman isn't picky.

BYU's talented senior receiver said Wednesday that he doesn't care whether he breaks a couple of the school's major receiving records at LaVell Edwards Stadium or away from home, he just wants to break them.

"I will take them whenever and wherever I can," he said.

Several records could fall on Saturday at Houston's Reliant Stadium when the BYU Cougars (4-2) take on the undefeated Houston Cougars (5-0) at 1:30 p.m. MT.

Hoffman needs just one catch to become BYU's all-time total receptions leader, having tied Dennis Pitta at 221 with five catches in last week's 38-20 win over Georgia Tech.

He needs one touchdown catch to move into a tie with Austin Collie for most career touchdown receptions, 30, after getting his first TD grab of the season against the Yellow Jackets.

Hoffman is also third on BYU's career receiving yards list with 3,029 and needs 37 yards to pass Eric Drage and 227 to pass Collie, who had 3,255 in just three years. This is Hoffman's fourth season.

"It would mean a lot [to break all the records]," Hoffman said. "I know there have been a lot of good receivers here, and a lot of great players overall, and for me to break the record would be a great feeling."

Hoffman said breaking the records "is in the back of my head. I know [they are] there. But at the same time, I am going to do what I know how to do best, and make plays for the team."

That was the case on BYU's second possession against Georgia Tech when Hoffman caught an over-the-shoulder pass from Taysom Hill while a Jackets defender was pulling the back of his jersey in the end zone. The play made ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays of the Day, at least the third time a Hoffman catch has been featured on that segment.

"When it first happened, I just thought it was a normal catch, didn't think too much about it," he said. "But then it was on SportsCenter, so it couldn't have been too bad of a catch."

Anae's perspective

Robert Anae, in the first year of his second stint as BYU's offensive coordinator, called the plays for Collie's last two seasons (2007, 2008), three of Pitta's seasons (2007-10) and for two of Hoffman's seasons (2010, 2013).

"You have to start out coming out of the blocks as a freshman, and get in a rotating mix, and [Hoffman] has done that," Anae said. "And then continuing to be dependable throughout four years. And it is a credit to Cody that he is at that stage right now. You look at a bunch of really good players, and a bunch of really good schemes, that should have put that [record] at some distance. But to Cody's credit, no matter the quarterback or the scheme, he has been a proven commodity for years. So we are very excited that he's back and in full swing."

Mid-season honorees

Ten BYU players have been selected to the Phil Steele Midseason All-Independent Team, including six on the first team and four on the second team.

Linebacker Kyle Van Noy, safety Daniel Sorensen made the defensive first team. Quarterback Taysom Hill and running back Jamaal Williams made the offensive first team. Punt returner JD Falslev and kick returner Adam Hine made the special teams first team.

Second-team honorees were Hoffman, linebacker Uani Unga and defensive tackles Eathyn Manumaleuna and Bronson Kaufusi.
