Provo • Severe weather is apparently following the BYU Cougars around early in the 2013 football season.
For the second straight week, BYU's game was suspended due to weather conditions.
About 50 minutes before the Cougars were scheduled to kick off against Texas on Saturday afternoon, officials delayed the start when a fierce rain and wind storm blew through LaVell Edwards Stadium.
Scheduled to start at 5 p.m., the game didn't begin until 6:53 p.m.
A few special-teams players were on the field when the heavy rains came, and quickly retreated to the locker room.
Last week, BYU's game against Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., was suspended for more than two hours at the end of the first quarter because lightning was detected in the area, and the stadium was cleared.
Saturday's delay marked the first time a BYU football game in Provo has been delayed by weather since the 2006 game against Tulsa.
A new drainage system was installed when BYU reconstructed its playing surface a few years ago and there was no puddling like there was last week at Scott Stadium.
Hoffman, Unga recover and play
After a week of speculation about whether they would play, receiver Cody Hoffman and linebacker Uani Unga played against the Longhorns. Hoffman was nursing a sore hamstring and Unga a chest contusion.
Hoffman started and caught a 34-yard pass in the second quarter to extend his receptions streak, while Unga did not but replaced Austen Jorgensen late in the first quarter.
Walk goes well
For the first time, BYU initiated a "Cougar Walk" before the game as players walked down a pathway lined by Cougar fans at the Southeast entrance to the stadium.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall said it was "fun" to be shown appreciation from the crowd and "connect" with BYU fans.
Danny Frazier (1977) brought out the alumni flag for BYU, while safety Craig Bills brought out the team flag and linebacker Jherremya Leuta-Douyere carried out the special teams flag. ... Texas won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. ... Juco transfer Edward Fusi was cleared to play and saw some time at center.
