BYU football: Cougars lead Texas 40-21 after three

Provo • Taysom Hill owned the Texas defense through the first three quarters Saturday.

The BYU sophomore quarterback ran for 234 yards and three scores to give the Cougars a 40-21 lead over the Longhorns after three quarters at Lavell Edwards Stadium.

Hill added 129 yards passing, but it was the Cougars’ running game that made the noise in the first half.

BYU rushed for 485 yards on 56 carries and scores all four of its touchdowns on the ground. Paul Lasike crossed the goal line for BYU’s other touchdown.

BYU outgained Texas 411-206 in the opening half.

The Cougars gained control in the second quarter when they trailed 14-10, but the Longhorns forced them to punt. A roughing the kicker penalty extended BYU’s drive, and Hill scored on a 20-yard run to give the Cougars a 17-14 lead, and it was beginning of 17 consecutive points by BYU to end the opening half.

Justin Sorensen kicked two field in the first half for the Cougars.

A monsoon-like rain drenched LaVell Edwards Stadium less than an hour before Saturday’s 5 p.m. scheduled kickoff between BYU and Texas, which forced play to be temporarily suspended.

The game kicked off at 6:52 p.m., almost two hours after the scheduled 5 p.m. kick.

The Cougars are no strangers to inclement weather this season. Their season opener at Virginia was delayed during the game for more than two hours because of a thunderstorm.

Texas (1-0) and BYU last met in September 2011, which the Longhorns won 17-16. The Cougars (0-1) won the first two meetings between the schools.
