The BYU women's gymnastics team seeks a repeat of 2005 when the Cougars earned a spot in the NCAA Championships and finished 11th in the nation.
First, however, BYU needs to do well in Saturday's NCAA regional meet in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (MDT)
"Everyone is feeling pretty good. It should be a great meet," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "The girls have been practicing hard and they look good. They've worked hard to qualify and we'll go and hopefully do well and see what happens."
BYU, at the site of defending national champion, No. 3 Alabama, will compete with No. 9 Utah, No. 15 Denver, No. 23 Kent State and Iowa State. The top two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, held April 19-21 in Los Angeles. Five other regional sites with six teams each will also compete on April 6 to field the teams for the championships.
"The goal is always to hit all of your routines," Cattermole said. "We'll count it up at the end and see how it matches up."
This season, BYU has a high score of 195.875. The team has posted top team scores of 49.125. on vault, 49.075 on bars, 49.050 on beam and 49.250 on floor.
