BYU basketball: Tyler Haws becomes second sophomore in school history to score 1,000 points

Moraga, Calif. • Jimmer Fredette didn’t do it, and neither did Mike Smith, Devin Durrant or Fred Roberts.

Only BYU great Danny Ainge passed the 1,000-point scoring barrier as a sophomore. Until Thursday night.

Tyler Haws scored 12 points in the Cougars’ 64-57 loss at Saint Mary’s giving him 1,003 in his career.

"It’s a great accomplishment," he said. "I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates and coaches. … I wish we could have done that and come out with a win. It hurts losing."

Ainge scored 632 points as a freshman in 1977-78 and 498 as a sophomore in 1978-79 for a two-year total of 1,130.

Haws was 4 for 10 from the field, 4 for 4 from the free throw line. But he picked up an offensive foul with about a minute left and missed a jumper while being heavily defended on the Cougars’ next possession.

"They just made the plays down the stretch to win," Haws said.

Fredette, BYU’s all-time leading scorer, had 244 points as a freshman in 2008-09 and 536 as a sophomore the following year for a two-year total of 780.

Where they are

A quick glance at the West Coast Conference statistical leaders list shows that BYU is one of the better offensive teams in the league, but not quite as good on the defensive end.

Heading into Thursday’s games, the Cougars were No. 2 in scoring offense at 78.0 points per game, just behind Gonzaga (78.5). They were No. 7 in scoring defense (69.2), partly because they push the ball a lot and create more possessions for not only themselves, but their opponents.

The Cougars lead the WCC in free-throw percentage (72.9 percent) and are third in field-goal percentage (46.0), but struggle from 3-point range, as many fans are aware. BYU is second-to-last in 3-point percentage, making just 33.3 percent of its long-range shots (161 of 184).

Although they have been out-rebounded in four of their last five games, the Cougars actually aren’t that bad at collecting caroms. They entered Thursday’s game third in the league in rebounding margin at plus-3.2 behind only Saint Mary’s (8.4) and Gonzaga (7.6).
