Provo • On a night when BYU honored former basketball greats Mel Hutchins and Roland Minson, the Cougars managed to avoid a historic losing streak at the Marriott Center.

Tyler Haws scored 28 points and Brandon Davies added 23 as BYU snapped its two-game losing skid with an 86-72 win over the Portland Pilots on Saturday.

The Cougars improved to 19-8 overall, 9-4 in the West Coast Conference. Portland fell to 10-18 and 3-10.

The Cougars still have not lost three straight games during coach Dave Rose's eight seasons. Craig Cusick got the start at the two-guard spot and scored 10 points, a total matched by point guard Matt Carlino.

The Cougars, who led 46-25 at halftime, maintained the double-digit cushion the entire second half and completed a season sweep of the Pilots, having won 85-67 in Portland three weeks ago. The Cougars led by as many as 24 points before Portland closed the game on a mild scoring run.

Haws scored 15 points in the first half for the Cougars and Davies added 11.

Portland shot just 30 percent in the first half, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range after San Francisco went 9 for 10 from beyond the arc in the second half against the Cougars last Saturday. The Cougars never trailed in the game.

BYU, which had been outrebounded the past two games, won the battle of the boards 31-28 against the smaller Pilots.

Minson's No. 11 jersey and Hutchins' No. 14 were hung in the rafters and the two men spoke briefly to the crowd at halftime.

Next up for BYU is a nonconference matchup with Utah State on Tuesday at the Marriott Center.
