Provo • The San Francisco Dons pulled off a major upset at the Marriott Center, overcoming a 15-point deficit in the second half to beat BYU 99-87 on Saturday night.
The Cougars scored the first six points of the second half to take a 54-39 lead, but then the Dons got hot. Really hot.
San Francisco finished shooting 14 of 23 from three-point range, including 9 of 10 in the second half, and defeated the Cougars for the first time in a West Coast Conference game. The Dons shot 72 percent from the field in the second half (18 of 25).
BYU fell to 18-8 overall, 8-4 in league play, while USF improved to 11-13 and 4-7.
The Dons took their first lead since early in the first half with 6:36 remaining when De'end Parker hit a three-pointer to complete an 8-0 run.
USF led by six with 4:10 remaining when Cody Doolin hit one of two free throws, and with the Cougars misfiring on the offensive end, was able to increase the lead.
The Cougars were 12 for 12 from the free-throw line in the first half and jumped out to a 48-39 lead.
Brock Zylstra, who was scoreless in the 74-68 loss at USD, had 13 points in the first half, while Brandon Davies had 10.
Tyler Haws scored eight points in the latter half of the half, but also picked up a technical foul for complaining about the Dons' rough tactics.
In the first half, the Cougars were 17 for 35 from the field, while USF was 14 for 32.
Obviously, the Dons shot much better in the last 20 minutes.
Zylstra finished with 18 points apiece for BYU and Davies had 13.
Parker led all scorers with 23 points for San Francisco.
