San Diego • After using the same starting lineup for 11 consecutive games, BYU basketball coach Dave Rose switched it up last Saturday, giving sophomore guard Anson Winder his first start of the season against Santa Clara.
The quicker, more defense-minded lineup proved to be a success, and the Cougars took a 96-79 win over the Broncos.

But as BYU (18-6, 8-2) prepares to take on surging San Diego (12-12, 5-4) at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday night (8 p.m. MST, BYUtv) in a key West Coast Conference game, Rose is going back to his pre-Santa Clara lineup.
Sure, the Toreros have one of the best guard lines in the conference in Chris Anderson and Johnny Dee, but Rose also has a lot of respect for their inside game and the talents of Chris Manresa, Dennis Kramer and Ken Rancifer.
That means Josh Sharp will get the starting nod at the power forward spot, and Brock Zylstra will move back to shooting guard.
"I think that we will probably lean more towards how we have started in the past," Rose said Wednesday after practice. "But that situation with Anson [starting], I thought was good for us. But Josh is a guy, with their front line, we will probably need more experience with our front-line guys."
Whatever happens, the Cougars are expecting a much more difficult game than their 74-57 win over the Toreros on Jan. 19.
They are also expecting Dee, who hit five 3-pointers against them in Provo, to play, although the sophomore guard with incredible range and a quick trigger sprained his ankle in USD’s 69-68 win at Loyola Marymount. Dee said on his Twitter account Wednesday that the ankle was feeling a lot better.
