BYU improved to 18-6 overall, 8-2 in WCC play with its third-straight win. Santa Clara fell to 17-7 and 5-4. Thursday, BYU overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Pepperdine 63-61.
Matt Carlino led BYU with 28 points on 10-for-17 shooting while wearing a bandage above his right eye for a cut that he was scheduled to have stitched up after the game. Tyler Haws added 24 points and Brandon Davies had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Josh Sharp, who did not start for the first time in 12 games, had 14 points off the bench.
After using the same starting lineup for the past 11 games, BYU coach Dave Rose switched it up for the rematch with the Broncos, going with Anson Winder at the shooting guard spot. Brock Zylstra moved over to the four spot, where Sharp usually starts.
Sharp, Haws and Carlino scored 12 points apiece in the first half as the Cougars shot 55.6 percent, but couldn’t get any separation because the Broncos made seven 3-pointers in the first half.
