Provo • The Cougars bounced back in a big way on Saturday night after having their lengthy homecourt winning streak snapped on Wednesday.
Tyler Haws scored 25 points and BYU walloped San Diego 74-57 at the Marriott Center.
BYU improved to 5-1 in West Coast Conference play with the win, 15-5 overall. San Diego fell out of the league lead with the loss and is now 4-1 and 11-9.
Brandon Davies added 17 points for the Cougars, while Matt Carlino had 11 and Brock Zylstra 10.
Haws scored 15 points in the first half, and the Cougars led 43-31 at the break.
BYU shot 48.4 percent in the first half while holding USD to 36 percent, and led by as many as 19 points.
The Cougars fell behind 10-5 early, but put together a 15-2 run to take control of the game through the middle part of the first half.
They stretched the lead to 28-15 with another run later in the half as USD made just one field goal in a seven-minute stretch.
Quiet the first 10 minutes, Haws scored 13 of his points in the final 6:33 of the half, thanks partly to Ken Rancifer's technical foul and USD coach Bill Grier's technical foul that gave the BYU star four free throws.
Johnny Dee made three 3-pointers in the final 2:30 of the half to get San Diego to within 12. He finished with 15 points.
