Provo • After playing one of their worst halves of basketball this season in the first 20 minutes, the BYU Cougars put together one of their best halves and blew out the Pepperdine Waves 76-51 on Thursday night at the Marriott Center.
Tyler Haws scored 24 points and Brandon Davies added 19 as BYU improved to 3-0 in West Coast Conference play, 13-4 overall. Pepperdine fell to 9-7 and 1-2.
Trailing 39-34 early in the second half, the Cougars put together a 20-1 run to regain control and cruised in the final 10 minutes.
The Waves scored just 16 points in the second half.
Jordan Baker led Pepperdine with 20 points, all in the first half.
Pepperdine took a 35-30 halftime lead after another awful offensive start for BYU.
Haws kept BYU reasonably close in the first half with 13 points, and Davies finished the half with a rebound dunk to send the Cougars into the locker room with a bit of much-needed momentum.
The Cougars shot just 28.1 percent in the first half, while the visiting Waves were red-hot, going 13 for 26 from the field, including 5 for 9 from 3-point range.
Baker, from Tempe, Ariz., was 7 for 10 from the field.
The Cougars struggled again from 3-point range, going 2 for 11 from there in the first half. They finished 5 for 17 from long range, and 42.9 percent (27 for 63) from the field.
