Former BYU football coach LaVell Edwards was recovering in his Provo home on Friday after undergoing open-heart surgery on Sunday at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.
Edwards, who turned 82 last October, needed the surgery after doctors discovered troubling irregularities after performing chest X-rays and an electrocardiogram (EKG) test.

One bypass operation was performed on Edwards’ heart, and some calcium buildup was removed.
Edwards was BYU’s coach from 1972 to 2000, compiling a 257-101-3 record.
Since retiring, he has served an LDS Church mission with his wife, Patti, in New York City and maintained an active lifestyle, playing golf and traveling.
