Ogden • It was the Brandon Davies and Tyler Haws show during much of the first half in BYU's 78-68 victory at Weber State on Saturday.

At one point, the duo, who finished with a combined 56 points — including a career-high 33 by Davies — had scored BYU's first 18 points.

Then the bench, which had been an inconsistent entity for the Cougars so far this season, began to contribute.

Slowly but surely, BYU's subs made their impact.

"I just played hard as good as I could when I got in there," said BYU guard Cory Calvert, who contributed nine points as a substitute. "We were just trying to bring some energy. Tonight, we were able to help out a little bit."

Nate Austin played 20 minutes and pulled down six rebounds, while Raul Delgado added two assists in 12 minutes of play.

Points, rebounds and assists aside, the players BYU coach Dave Rose brought off the bench added energy and defensive intensity.

"It's a big win," Rose said. "We had so many guys play well. That's probably the best part of this win. We got so many guys involved that can get confidence from this."

Calvert's 3-point basket helped fuel a Cougar run midway through the second half. Delgado's layup finished the 8-0 burst after Weber State pulled to within 51-49.

"That's a good thing about coming off the bench," Calvert said. "You can see how guys are playing, tendencies and things like that. They were really hugging Ty and Brandon, so I saw some openings."

BYU needed a complete effort to keep a dogged Weber State at bay. Each time the Cougars opened some space, the Wildcats, behind Dav Berry's 25 points, would fight back.

"We knew it would take a great effort on our part," Rose said. "We just got big plays from a lot of guys. That's how it happens. You get guys to make plays.

"We withstood two or three really emotional, physical runs they put on us. We were able to come out of that, get back on top of it."
