BYU basketball: Lone Peak junior Eric Mika commits to Cougars
Provo • Eric Mika is not playing high school basketball this season due to an unfavorable transfer ruling by the Utah High School Activities Association, but the 6-foot-8 forward already knows where he will be playing his college basketball.
Mika, a junior who is currently attending Lone Peak High, committed to BYU on Friday night.
"Well .... it's official ... BYU basketball offered a scholarship and i committed! Gonna be a Coug with my boys [Nick Emery and T.J. Haws]," Mika wrote on his Twitter account Friday night.
Reached by telephone, Mika confirmed his commitment but declined further comment, referring questions to his father.
Ron Mika said his son chose BYU because he has always been a fan of the school's basketball program, and because he looks forward to playing at the college level with some of his future high school teammates.
"He's very excited about it," Ron Mika said
BYU coach Dave Rose has been talking to Eric Mika for several months and offered him a scholarship in late November. Eric Mika also had offers from Weber State and Utah State. Several other Division I schools, such as Utah, Stanford and Boston College, were interested.
Mika expects to play for Lone Peak next season when he will be a senior. He played last year for Waterford, a private school in Sandy, averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Ravens, a 2A program. He was named a first-team all-stater after his sophomore season.
Both of Mika's parents graduated from BYU, and he has four siblings who attended or are attending BYU.
Mika is in the same class as the aforementioned Emery, and both are expected to sign national letters of intent with the Cougars next November. Haws also plays for Lone Peak, but is just a sophomore.
Nick Emery is the younger brother of graduated BYU star Jackson Emery, while T.J. Haws is the brother of current Cougar Tyler Haws, who is currently on an LDS Church mission in the Phillippines.
Current BYU players Josh Sharp and Nate Austin are also Lone Peak products.
