Provo • If the BYU Cougars and Boise State Broncos aren't rivals in football now, they will be soon.

Boise State and BYU agreed to a 12-year, home-and-home series that begins in 2012 at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

The new deal replaces the four-year series that was set to begin next year anyway.

All but next year's game (Sept. 22) and the 2015 game in Provo (Sept. 12) will be played in the month of October.

The Cougars are 0-2 all-time to the Broncos, having lost in 2003 and 2004.

"Boise State has established itself as one of the premier football programs in the country," BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a school news release. "Playing the Broncos regularly makes a lot of sense for two regional opponents with great football traditions. We are excited about the series."

When BYU announced it was going independent in football last year, several Mountain West Conference schools said they would no longer play the Cougars in football. Boise State joined the MWC this summer. —
