BYU readmits Brandon Davies to school, reinstates him on basketball team

Provo • Basketball star Brandon Davies has been readmitted to BYU and will play on the men's basketball team in the 2011-12 season, the school announced Friday afternoon, three days before fall semester classes are scheduled to begin.

Davies, a 6-foot-9 junior center from nearby Provo High School, was not allowed to represent BYU on the basketball floor in March after he admitted to school officials that he broke the portion of the school's honor code that forbids premarital sex. Davies was allowed to sit on the bench with his teammates during BYU's run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, but without him a school that had climbed into the top five of the national college basketball rankings lost three times in his absence late in the season.

"I am excited to be back at BYU and look forward to the future. I am grateful for this opportunity," Davies said in a school news release.

In April, Davies announced he was withdrawing from school, but would reapply for admission if he met certain, unspecified requirements set forth by school officials and the school's honor-code office.

"Our staff and our players are pleased that Brandon has been readmitted for the fall semester. We're excited to have him back on the team, and we look forward to a great season," said BYU coach Dave Rose in the same release.

Davies missed BYU's spring and summer classes, which are the equivalent of a full semester when taken together, but perhaps the biggest punishment he received was that he was not able to go on the recent trip to Greece with the team. The Cougars went 2-2 on the trip, losing their last two games to national squads from Greece and Italy.

He started in 26 games as a sophomore before the dismissal, averaging 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
