BYU outfielder Jaycob Brugman and New Mexico infielder D.J. Peterson have been named to the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) freshman All-American team, the organization announced Monday. Brugman was a first-team selection, while Peterson was a second-team honoree. The Mountain West was one of nine conferences with multiple representatives on the list.
Brugman, the 2011 Mountain West freshman of the year and a first-team all-conference selection, played in 53 of the Cougars' 58 games in 2011, hitting .317 with 19 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 49 RBI and 37 runs scored. A native of Phoenix, Ariz., Brugman also swiped 13 of 15 bases.
Peterson was one of two Lobos to start in all 61 games this season, hitting .317 with 32 doubles, three triples, six home runs, 48 RBI and 39 runs scored. The Gilbert, Ariz., product's 32 doubles set a new NCAA freshman single-season record and also tied former Lobo Justin Howard (2010) for the highest-single season overall tally in Mountain West history.
The 2011 NCBWA national freshman player of the year and national freshman pitcher of the ear will be announced June 14.
