Police arrested a man in the strangulation of his girlfriend after investigating a report of suspicious circumstances at a northwest Salt Lake City apartment.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Shawn Josephson said officers received a call from someone who was concerned about the woman's welfare around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

"The call did not come from where the victim was found," Josephson said.

After obtaining a search warrant for an apartment at 535 N. 200 West, they entered and found the body of Jennifer Schubach, 39.

The victim's boyfriend, Todd Eugene Anderson, 42, was booked Saturday morning into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of homicide.

Josephson said the slaying culminated a fight between Schubach and her boyfriend.

According to a probable cause statement, Anderson "confessed to killing his girlfriend by strangling her with his arms" by doing what he called a "rear naked choke."

Josephson said evidence at the scene supports Anderson's story. Police are not sure if the two were living together, but they were boyfriend and girlfriend.

In August in a state courtroom in Richfield, Anderson's then-wife sought a protection order against him. She accused Anderson of abuse and said he does not know what he is capable of when he gets in that "mood," according to a court docket. Anderson denied the abuse allegations.

Anderson pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of intoxication March 31 in a Richfield courtroom then entered the same plea to the same charge the next day in Cedar City. Anderson also has a felony conviction for criminal mischief.
