The first of what should be many postseason honors for BYU senior Jimmer Fredette came Monday afternoon when he was named the men's basketball Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference.

A 6-foot-2 guard who leads the country in scoring with a 27.9 average, Fredette was also named to the MWC's first-team, becoming the only player in league history to earn first-team honors three straight years.

Also Monday, BYU's Dave Rose was named the conference's Co-Coach of the Year with San Diego State's Steve Fisher.

Fredette's backcourt running mate and fellow senior Jackson Emery was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year.

Also earning first-team honors: San Diego State's Kawhi Leonard and D.J. Gay, Colorado State's Andy Ogide and New Mexico's Dairese Gary.

Emery earned second-team honors, while BYU sophomore Brandon Davies made the third team.

Utah's Will Clyburn is on the second team and Utah center David Foster was named to the all-defensive team.

New Mexico's Drew Gordon is the MWC Newcomer of the Year, while Lobos teammate Kendall Williams is the Freshman of the Year. Colorado State's Pierce Hornung is the league's Sixth Man of the Year.

On the women's side, BYU coach Jeff Judkins is the MWC Coach of the Year and BYU's Mindy Bonham is the women's Defensive Player of the Year. BYU's Kristen Riley is the Sixth Player of the Year.

Utah's Michelle Plouffe is the women's Freshman of the Year. —
