How many jobs does Sterling Poulson have?
We all know Poulson as chief meteorologist on KUTV, Ch. 2. We've also seen him in his tux, leading the Days of '47 Pops concert every July, as music director and founder of The Choral Arts Society of Utah.
But Poulson also is an Air Force senior master sergeant, and works as the public affairs noncommissioned officer of the Utah Air National Guard.
In a profile on the Department of Defense's American Forces Press Service, Poulson said that his military service — 10 years active duty in the Air Force, then joining the reserves in 1980 — complements his civilian job as a meteorologist:
"Everything I learned about weather, I learned in the military. ... When I first went to Offutt Air Force Base [in Nebraska], I worked under Col. Robert Miller. He's the one who wrote 'the book' on severe weather forecasting, and I got to learn a lot from him. I soaked it up like a sponge. It was like going to a seminar every day."
