Chaffetz votes against JoePa, and loses
Once again, Joe Paterno went up against Jason Chaffetz and Chaffetz came out on the short end of the scoreboard.
On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution to honor Penn State's legendary football coach for his 400th career win. According to Politico.com, the resolution passed 417-3 and Utah's freshman congressman Jason Chaffetz was one of the three to vote against.
Politico asked Chaffetz why, and he said it wasn't anything against Paterno but part of his long-standing objection to wasting Congress' time with frivolous resolutions.
"Sports teams and heroes get more than their share of adulation," Chaffetz said. "Let's start recognizing teachers and scientists."
Politico did note that Chaffetz and Paterno have met before. Chaffetz was a place-kicker for the Brigham Young University Cougars in the 1988 and 1989 seasons and Chaffetz' last game, the 1989 Holiday Bowl, had BYU facing Penn State. The Nittany Lions beat the Cougars, 50-39, though Chaffetz did kick two field goals for the BYU cause.
