You want upsets? Utah football gave one to remember this week against No. 8 UCLA.

And yet, it wasn't the only upset this week from a Utah team. Volleyball found a way against Arizona State at home this week. Women's soccer was less successful.

Meanwhile, many other sports are stirring, and even just getting started, so let's start this thing:

FOOTBALL • Here's the headliner of the week: The Utes (4-1, 1-1) bounced back from a disaster at home against Washington State to road conquers. With Kendal Thompson throwing the passes, Devontae Booker on the runs, and Utah's defense orchestrating a 10-sack evening, the No. 8 Bruins couldn't survive. Utah entered their second bye week - yes, already - ranked No. 24 in the country. Talk about a turnaround. Here's our coverage from the game:

• Utah lays a stunner on No. 8 UCLA at the Rose Bowl.• Kendal Thompson takes over at quarterback early and makes the most of his shot.• Devontae Booker rams his way to a win in his first game as unquestioned starter.• The defensive line rolled over the Bruins' offensive line for big pressure on Brett Hundley.• Gordon Monson writes the Utes have revived their chances for real success this year.• A day after, Matt Piper writes that Utah established an identity in its winning formula.• Utah's upset was not the only one around the Pac-12, by the way.

ON DECK • Bye week before Oregon State, which is an Oct. 16 game, 8 p.m. MT in Corvallis, Ore.

MEN'S BASKETBALL • Hey look, it's basketball season. The Utes started their first practice of the season on Friday, just as most were getting worked up for the big football game this weekend. Larry Krystkowiak's group is deep and experienced on paper this year, but it's up to the Utes to prove the preseason hype. Stay tuned, media day is on Monday and we'll have more for you.

ON DECK • vs. Pacific, Nov. 6 (exhibition)

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL • The Utah women's basketball team has also begun fall practice, and those Utes have been going for a week. The group is hoping to have a bounce-back season with a fully healthy Taryn Wicijowski. Also, several former Utes went head-to-head in the FIBA Championship, with Kim Smith and Michelle Plouffe's Canadian team prevailing over Team Australia.

ON DECK • vs. Alaska-Anchorage, Nov. 5 at the Huntsman Center

GYMNASTICS • The Red Rocks finalized the schedule for their 40th season, which starts on Jan. 9 at BYU and features home meets against UCLA, Stanford, and Michigan. You can view the schedule by clicking here.

ON DECK • Jan. 9 at BYU. Also a team preview Dec. 12 at home.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL • Bringing in the Arizona teams did end up breaking Utah's slow streak, as the Utes upset No. 17 Arizona State after losing the first match to Arizona early in the weekend. Adora Anae and Chelsey Schofield-Olsen each had 17 kills in the 3-1 victory.

ON DECK • at UCLA, Friday 9 p.m. MT; at USC, Saturday 8 p.m. MT

WOMEN'S SOCCER • The Utes (7-2-3, 0-2-1) finally fell in their Los Angeles trip this weekend, not finding the net in either game. Utah lost a 1-0 match with No. 1 UCLA before getting a 2-0 loss against No. 23 USC on Sunday. They'll be looking for their first win in an upcoming road trip.

ON DECK • at Oregon, Friday 5 p.m. MT; at Oregon State, Sunday 1 p.m. MT

SWIMMING AND DIVING • Utah won its meet at the Intermountain Shootout, both men and women's teams. The women claimed 11 wins, with Petra Soininen claiming two individual wins in 200 fly and 100 fly. The men had seven wins, including spots one through four in the 200 fly.

ON DECK • The women's team takes on Boise State in Boise, Idaho on Wednesday. Men's next action on Nov. 1 for a dual meet with Arizona and UNLV.

MEN'S GOLF • The Utes finished ninth in the two-day Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., as junior Jonathon Thomas finished four strokes under for the tournament. He hit a first-round 62, setting a tournament record and tying a course record.

ON DECK • Utah Ogio Invitational, all day Monday and Tuesday at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Park City. This is Utah's only home tournament of the year.

MEN'S TENNIS • Two freshmen Utes, Johan Jonhagen and Louis Gascon, reached the final rounds of their respective flights, but both lost in two sets.

ON DECK • Utah Intercollegiate Tournament, Thursday through Saturday at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy in Salt Lake City.

WOMEN'S TENNIS • Utah's No. 79 ranked Tereza Bekerova fell in the first round and consolation round in her appearance in the ITA Championships. She was the only Ute competing.

ON DECK • ITA Regional tournament, Oct. 15 through 19 in Albuquerque, N.M.

WOMEN'S CROSS-COUNTRY • Rebekah Winterton's 16th overall finish led the Utes, who finished 10th as a team, in a result coach Kyle Kepler described as "disappointing." Utah was hurt by a reported illness to freshman runner Sarah Feeny, whom Matt Piper profiled this week.

ON DECK • Indiana State Pre Nationals Invitational, Oct. 18 in Terre Haute, Ind.

SOFTBALL • Utah did not officially release results for games at SLCC and at home against Snow College on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

ON DECK • at Colorado State, 11 a.m. MT in Fort Collins. First and only time the Utes will travel out of state this fall.

BASEBALL • The Utes played three intrasquad scrimmages this week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

ON DECK • Intrasquad scrimmages on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ute Field.
