Throw the Utah-Arizona game on the pile of wacky college football contests that took place Saturday. The Utes lost in a surprising way with Arizona back Ka'Deem Carey totaling a school record 236 yards.
No doubt Carey is a great back, as the Utes learned last year when he rushed for 204 yards against them. That he bettered his stats on Saturday against a Utah defense that played so well against Stanford was surprising.
Just as troubling for the Utes was the offensive woes. Quarterback Travis Wilson threw two interceptions before he was sidelined due to a swollen right hand.
Backup Adam Schulz finished the night 12-of-23 for 142 yards, including a 55-yard flea flicker touchdown play to Sean Fitzgerald, but couldn't manufacture a winning drive in the end.
There was plenty of blame to share in the loss with the defense failing to stop Carey, the special teams failing to deliver and Utah's offense failing to dominate the line of scrimmage.
The Utes finished with just 42 rushing yards in the second half and had 125 passing in the half, but 55 of those yards came on the flea flicker.
The Utes needed a lot more production to beat the Wildcats, a lot more.
After the game Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was evasive about Wilson's injury, only offering he was concerned.
There is plenty of concern to go around, no doubt.
