Utes win game, lose receiver Scott to injury

Remember a few days ago when we were theorizing what would happen if Dres Anderson or Kenneth Scott was hurt considering it doesn't seem like the Utes have much depth?

Well it seems that time is here. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said following the Utes' 30-26 win over the Aggies that Scott's lower-leg injury is season-ending.

Scott, a junior, broke his ankle his freshman year and redshirted, so the Utes expect he'll get a medical hardship from the NCAA.

With Scott out it will be up to Anthony Denham and Sean Fitzgerald to step up. Both had big games Thursday, with Denham finishing with six catches for 113 yards and Fitzgerald finishing with five catches for 79 yards.

"It's a big blow to us," Whittingham said of Scott's injury. "He and Dres are clearly our top two receivers and to lose him is tough but I was proud of Anthony Denham and Sean Fitzgerald. It's next man up."

Luckily for the Utes, they have some time to adjust with Weber State up next.

Another questionable spot is at running back where Kelvin York had 10 carries for 30 yards in the first half, then didn't play again.

Whittingham, who doesn't discuss injuries unless they are season-ending, declined to give more details.

In York's absence, James "Bubba" Poole rushed 12 times for 47 yards and Karl Williams rushed 12 times for 45 yards.

"Karl ran hard and Bubba ran hard, but we have to get more out of the run game," Whittingham said. "We're nowhere near where it needs to be to be productive. We've been bragging on the offensive line all camp but we need to be more dominant than we were tonight."

Overall it was a decent night for the Utes. They got the win but they know they have a lot of work to do.
