Wilson has a good but short day for Utes

The Utes are using their scrimmages this week to decide most of the position battles. Unfortunately for media members, our viewing time is so limited it's virtually impossible to give opinions on who is leading and who is falling behind others.

A few things did stand out though on Tuesday.

The Utes were very happy with the way Travis Wilson was running the offense before he tweaked his ankle, with co-offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson saying it was his best showing yet. He was particularly happy with Wilson's work in the red zone.

The Utes seem to have plenty of options to back up running back Kelvin York, but they might have found another option in freshman Dre'Vian Young, a 5-9, 171-pound speedster out of Houston who Erickson described as 'wow.'

Also standing out was the presence of 6-3 corner Keith McGill, who is a leading candidate to start, but continues to struggle with weight. He needs to drop another 10 pounds to be at a playing weight under 210, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.

Whittingham said McGill was heading in the right direction until he was sidelined for a few days with a concussion and gained weight again.

McGill practiced with the backups Tuesday and after the scrimmage he slammed his helmet to the ground and started running gassers.

Apparently the Utes' weight loss program isn't exactly thrilling him.

How he responds is definitely going to be something to watch as the season opener gets closer. The Utes are younger than they've ever been at corner, Whittingham said, and the Utes could stand some seniority/leadership from McGill.
