With spring practice just a few days away, in the coming days we are going to break down some of the key positions to watch when the Utes take the field on Tuesday.
We're going to start with the quarterback position, a spot that receives plenty of scrutiny given the issues the Utes have had there with injuries to Jordan Wynn and the development of Travis Wilson last year in Wynn's place.
Dennis Erickson, Utah's recently hired co-offensive coordinator, said this week he likes what he sees on film in Wilson, who who finished 128-for-204 for 1,311 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions in 2012.
"I like Travis as a leader," he said. "I haven't been able to see him throw yet myself, but from what I have seen he is accurate, a big kid with a strong arm. He still has some growing to do, but the biggest thing that jumped out at me is he moves really well for a big guy."
A lack of durability obviously was an issue with Wynn, but Erickson believes Wilson and his 6-foot-6 frame can handle more. He is going to have to, he said.
"It's football," he said. "It's the name of the game. We're not going to put him out there and get him killed in spring, but he needs to learn how to play with live ammo coming at him. The thing he needs to worry about in the fall is just going out and winning."
The competition for the backup spot should be interesting during spring too.
Returner Adam Schulz (6-1, 205) and freshman Brandon Cox (6-2, 200) are listed as the backups.
Schulz is a walk-on from Muskego, Wis., who has shown a strong arm while Cox is a 2013 signee who enrolled early.
He played in just two games due to a foot injury for Pasadena H.S., but in 2011 he led the league going 159-for-249 for 2,697 yards and 26 touchdowns with five interceptions.
