Had a story today in the Salt Lake Tribune on Reggie Dunn and his achievements with his kickoff returns. His play is going to force teams to treat him differently as a kickoff return, and it might just cause the NCAA to re-visit the records the organization keeps.
Right now, the NCAA doesn't have a listing for most 100-yard returns in a game, only most total yards and most touchdowns.
However, Dunn's feats might have the NCAA looking to create such a category. According to NCAA officials, the NCAA will create categories if it considers achievements outstanding enough to have their own records. It will be decided at the end of the year whether Dunn's two, 100-yard returns against Cal deserve their own section in the NCAA record books.
According to the NCAA, 303 players have returned kicks for 100 yards since 1941. Dunn is the first to have four in his career.
Dunn said he isn't too worried about the records or publicity.
"I'm still just a normal guy," he said.
To him, just achieving and then surpassing something Barry Sanders did is reward enough. Sanders had three 100-yard returns in his career at Oklahoma State.
"Barry Sanders is one of the greatest of all time," he said. "For my name to be mentioned with his is crazy to me."
