Utah DB Topps will be reinstated after season opener

Fall camp might be over but the competition is continuing for the Utes, who had a rather spirited practice Tuesday. It was just the kind of session the Utes were hoping to have after Monday's effort, which wasn't quite up to standard.

"Yesterday with the start of school, they had that glazed look in their eyes," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "Today they responded much better and it was a physical practice. You kind of anticipate that with the first day of school, there is a lot going on, but they came back and did a nice job today."

Whittingham joked that quarterback Jordan Wynn was fine and threw 6,000 passes. (Yes, he did throw.)

Defensive back Reggie Topps, who was suspended in the spring for breaking team rules, will sit out the first game then be fully reinstated, Whittingham said. Topps had 33 tackles last year and is Utah's most experienced nickel back.

Getting him back on the field will be a boost for the Utes who lack experience at the position.

Right now sophomore Wykie Freeman is listed as the starter.

Joining Topps in missing the first game will be safety Brian Blechen, who is under a three-game suspension for breaking team rules.

Whittingham said they are the only two players who will miss the opener due to disciplinary reasons.

The Utes are still looking at options for their offensive line. Whittingham said right guard Sam Brenner could play at tackle. Right now Miles Mason and Percy Taumoelau are slotted as the starting tackles.

"It's still a debatable thing for us," Whittingham said. "We want the best five out there."
