Utes put to test as end of camp draws close

The Utes hit each other in Tuesday's scrimmage, then hit a wall in Wednesday's practice session.

With just a few days left in camp, the Utes admit they are feeling the grind.

"It wasn't our most effective practice, we didn't take a step backwards, but we weren't as sharp as we needed to be," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We looked a little bit tired today which can't happen. You have to fight through it."

Wednesday and Friday are the remaining two-a-days. The Utes wrap up camp on Saturday with a scrimmage then head into regular season mode on Monday.

"We're tired, we are all tired," receiver Dres Anderson said. "But this is that part of camp where you have to keep going harder. This is the kind of thing you have to do to win championships."

Not much has changed with Utah's depth chart after the coaches reviewed Tuesday's scrimmage, including the quarterback situation where freshman Travis Wilson is pushing returner Jordan Wynn.

"Jordan is still No. 1," Whittingham said. "Like I said from the onset, it's a competition, but it doesn't mean it's a controversy. Jordan, until someone unseats him, is our guy."

Whittingham said there was no separation among the linebackers with five or six guys competing for the spots.

Overall he saw improvement from the first scrimmage.

"The route structures were cleaner and the run game was good and we made fewer mental mistakes," he said. "Defensively we made fewer mistakes, but we still made too many."

There were no new injuries Wednesday morning. Safety Quade Chappuis remains sidelined with a sore shoulder and was joined by defensive end Nate Fakahafua. Fakahafua, who joined the team late in camp to take care of some family issues, also has a sore shoulder.
