Not surprisingly, the Utes weren't quite as clean in their afternoon practice on Wednesday as they were in the morning session. Welcome to two-a-days. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was happy with the way the defense looked with guys like Ryan Lacy, Mo Lee and others continuing to make plays throughout camp. The Utes will have a better idea of how the depth chart is looking with Thursday's scrimmage. The Utes plan to get in about 90 snaps and will look particularly at the running back, linebacker and offensive line spots where several players are competing for time. Running back John White and Star Lotulelei are among those who won't participate in the live work. Jordan Wynn, Jon Hays and Travis Wilson will all get their share of snaps. The battle for the backup role has been an interesting one with Hays, who started the last nine games last year, doing well enough to hold off Wilson, the freshman who had a very strong spring. "Jon has had an outstanding camp and has an edge in that battle right now," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "They'll both continue to get reps and see how they grade out." The other interesting spot to watch is at kicker, where junior Nick Marsh is ahead of returner Coleman Petersen who has had trouble being consistent. Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn said he wants to see the offense continuing to be as efficient as it has through the first part of camp. "We need to have a good day and come out and rip it and put the numbers up," he said, noting the season opener is less than three weeks away. "We need to solidify some things, have some guys step up and get things rolling." Here is video of Whittingham talking to the media about the scrimmage and the competition between the kickers.
