Utes avoiding any spring slump

It's normal for teams to go through a mini-slump here and there during spring ball, but so far that dip hasn't happened to the Utes.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham came off the field Tuesday very pleased with the way his team is developing with just five practices remaining.

"We haven't had a bad practice yet," he said. "We did a lot of live work in short yardage and they handled it well. All the install is basically done so the last five practices we'll be working on stuff we've already put in."

The kickers got some extra attention after a subpar effort in the scrimmage and did a better job, but it was obvious Whittingham doesn't want to go through another year of unpredictable kicking.

Coleman Petersen, who was 18-of-25 last year, returns but has been inconsistent.

"We don't want to be up and down," Whittingham said. "We need consistency."

Travis Wilson continues to seemingly get more reps than fellow freshman Chase Hansen, but Whittingham said there is no difference between the two backup quarterbacks and said both are getting equal attention.

"Travis played well in the scrimmage," Whittingham said. "For where he is in the scheme of things and for how long he has been here, he is pretty impressive and you can say the same thing about Chase."

Backup running back Kelvin York missed Tuesday's practice with a sprained knee but should be back in practice Thursday.
