Utes suspend senior defensive back

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham addressed the situation with defensive back Reggie Topps following Tuesday's practice, saying the senior has been indefinitely suspended from the team for a violation of team rules.

He remains on the team roster, although he can't participate in any official team activities including meetings, practices and weight lifting sessions.

Topps played in every game last year and finished with 33 tackles, 16 of which were solo.

Senior Lewis Walker and sophomore Joseph Smith are listed as one and two, respectively.

While Topps' absence hurts since he had so much experience, Whittingham said he had little choice.

"You never want to lose a good player but we expect our guys to handle themselves a certain way and we have to do what is best for the entire football team," Whittingham said.

Whittingham left open the possibility that Topps could return to the team.

"We'll have to see how he handles himself," he said.

As for Tuesday's practice, Utah's defense got the better of the offense.

"We hadn't blitzed that much in the first practices and today we started bringing more pressure defensively," Whittingham said. "The first day of doing that hectic for offense but they'll handle it."

Utah's injury list is growing. Receiver Anthony Denham will miss the rest of spring ball with an injured thumb, freshman defensive back Joseph Bryant is out with an injured shoulder that required surgery to repair and receiver Charles Henderson is out with an injured knee.
