Defensive end Nate Fakahafua, tight end Jake Murphy, quarterback Jordan Wynn and running back John White all drew praise from Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on Tuesday as the Utes ran through a short but productive practice at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"We didn't have the pads on but there was still a lot of physicality so there were a lot of bright spots," he said.
Whittingham repeated the need to find depth along the offensive line, particularly at the tackle spots where the Utes lost John Cullen and Tony Bergstrom. Right now junior Percy Taumoelau is penciled in at left tackle and Daniel Nielson is at right tackle.
Nielson has a minor knee injury so junior Kapua Sai is getting reps with the first team.
"We've got some good candidates but that's a spot we need to get ironed down," he said.
Running back Harvey Langi got some snaps at fullback since the Utes have so many backs in camp. Freshman Jarrell Oliver could be pushing for more reps along with Kelvin York and veteran John White.
Tight end David Rolf remains sidelined with a calf injury that is lingering more than the Utes expected and he could be out another 10 days, Whittingham said.
"We hope to get him back at some point," Whittingham said. "We don't think it's career ending and he should be 100 percent at some point. The positive is Jake Murphy and Westlee Tonga are taking more reps and developing. Jake made some great catches and he is starting to do the things we knew he was capable of."
