Utes add heft to lines
Published on Feb 1, 2012 05:48PM

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham joked as he put on a pair of glasses to read some of the stats on his newly signed 2012 class.
"It's that time of my life, I guess," he said.
He won't need glasses to see the guys on the field though as the Utes added considerable heft to their lines.
The top get, at least on the scales, was Carlos Lozano, a 6-foot-6, 385-pound offensive lineman out of East Los Angeles College who picked the Utes over Kansas and Washington State.
Other hefty gets of note for the Utes were Visesio "Junior" Salt, a 6-2, 340-pound defensive lineman from Glendale, Utah, who originally committed to Florida but decided he wanted to play closer to home. Offensive lineman Hiva Lutui, out of Trinity H.S., in Euless Texas, was another notable top signee as the 6-foot-2, 277-pounder chose Utah over USC and UCLA while Cedrick Poutasi, a 6-5, 325-pound lineman out of Las Vegas who is the 10th-rated offensive guard by Rivals.com, remained true to his commitment for the Utes.
Signing bulky players was a priority for the Utes after their first experience in the Pac-12, he said.
"We matched up well on the defensive line but we needed to bulk up with taller and heavier guys," he said of the offensive line.
Whittingham said he felt the Utes met all their needs with the recruiting class.
The Utes signed 10 players from Utah, eight from California and three from Texas.
"In-state, California and Texas are still our primary footprints," he said.
The Utes have five players who will go on missions before enrolling, in the meantime the Utes welcome in seven junior college players.
Whittingham said the Utes have had good luck with the JC guys. Salt is one in particular the Utes are happy to sign as Whittingham had visions of him playing with Dave Kruger and Star Lotulelei.
"We felt last year we had the best defensive line in the Pac-12 and I think that proved to be the case with Star and Derrick Shelby and it should be a strong suit again."
As for the quarterbacks signed, Chase Hansen and Travis Wilson, Whittingham said it was important to sign two because he wanted four guys available.
"Both should be here for spring ball and absolutely they'll get a bunch of reps," he said.
He added that Jordan Wynn, who missed most of the year with a shoulder injury, is throwing 100 percent.

As for Utah's open offensive coordinator position, Whittingham said he'll have a coordinator named by the end of the week. He said the Utes aren't waiting for the announcement by design, but that the recruiting was his first priority.
"We aren't trying to create any drama," he said.
