Utah QB Wynn should be healthy for spring ball

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham expects Jordan Wynn to be healthy enough to participate in spring practice, which starts March 20.

Whittingham, who is filling his so called 'down time' with recruiting and an offensive coordinator search, said he feels comfortable enough with the Utes' quarterback situation going into 2012, even if Wynn has a growing history of injuries. He said the quarterback's rehab has gone well and that he is eager to see him on the field in spring ball.

"We anticipate he'll be up to speed by then," he said.

Jon Hays, who filled in for Wynn after the junior was hurt in the fourth game of the year, will go back to being the backup, Whittingham said.

"There is always a battle for every position," Whittingham said. "But Jordan will be No. 1 going into spring and we expect him to continue to produce."

The Utes have commitments from two other quarterbacks, Chase Hansen out of Lone Peak H.S. and Travis Wilson out of San Clemente, Calif.

Griff Robles, a quarterback who was moved to defense for 2011 then back to quarterback after Wynn was hurt, has transferred to Dixie State College.

As for finding his new coordinator, Whittingham said he will continue to take his time and said he has more than 70 applicants. He will wait until he hires a coordinator to find a replacement for Dave Schramm, the running backs coach who has joined Fresno State's coaching staff as offensive coordinator.

"I'd like (the new coordinator) to have some latitude of who he wants to bring in that open spot," Whittingham said of the opening Schramm's departure created. "Dave did a great job for us and we wish him well. He got a chance to coordinate again which is in his best interest so we support that."
