With Jordan Wynn still out with the flu, Utah's backup quarterbacks got more snaps Wednesday afternoon which is helping the coaches define the quarterback depth chart. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said Jon Hays is firmly No. 2, but the battle for the third spot continues. "Adam Schulz and Tyler Shreve are splitting reps and we're trying to figure out who that third guy is," he said. "Right now Tyler is in the lead." Schulz, a 6-1, 191-pound freshman, has impressed the coaches with his strong arm. Also missing from Wednesday's afternoon session with injuries were key players such as corner Conroy Black, running back John White and several linemen. Their absences are starting to affect the team, Whittingham said. "We need to get the majority of those guys out of the pit and back on the field in the next three days," he said. Defensive lineman Lei Talamaivao missed the Wednesday afternoon session with a sore foot. Overall the offense had a better session than it has lately, Whittingham said. There were two notable visitors to Utah's practices Wednesday. One was Dale Murphy, the baseball star whose son, Jake, is competing for time at the tight end position. The other was Zach Lindsay, a 6-8, 285-pound lineman out of Davis H.S. who originally committed to BYU. However it looks like Utah could be the destination for him now. With the current state of Utah's offensive line, too bad he can't suit up and jump in and help immediately.
