The execution the Utes wanted to see in their second scrimmage was there, until the Utes focused on their situational work.
Then, sacks, turnovers and dropped balls left Utah coach Kyle Whittingham calling Tuesday's scrimmage just average.
Quarterback Jordan Wynn was 9-for-16 for 120 yards and a 14-yard touchdown to Dres Anderson while backup Jon Hays was 9-for-10 for 76 yards.
Tauni Vakapuna rushed eight times for 48 yards, Harvey Langi rushed seven times for eight yards with one touchdown and Thretton Palamo had 10 carries for just one yard.
John White, the No. 1 running back, sat out with a hip pointer. He is expected to be back by Thursday.
Defensively, Michael Walker made a nice breakup on a pass from Wynn intended for Luke Matthews and brothers Dave and Joe Kruger both made some nice plays as did Nate Fakahafua.
Derrick Shelby had two sacks and David Rolf, a transfer from Michigan State, had three.
Overall Whittingham was happy with the secondary, but the offensive breakdowns in the situational drills didn't make him happy.
I know there is a lot of interest in the development of Langi, who was first on the depth chart last week and has faded recently. He has a chance now to make a new impression on the coaches, but he didn't help his case when he fumbled in the drills at the end of Tuesday's scrimmage.
As for the kicking game, Whittingham said walk-on Coleman Petersen is ahead of Nick Marsh for the place kicking duties, although he didn't seem happy with either one.
One interesting note, defensive back Quade Chappuis, a sophomore out of Lone Peak H.S., who has looked good in camp but isn't on the depth chart, has been awarded a scholarship.
Vakapuna, on the other hand, remains a walk-on even though he potentially could get a lot of playing time.
Whittingham said there were a lot of factors involved in deciding which players are awarded scholarships and that Vakapuna appears headed in that direction.
