Bad start leads to bad finish for Utes

Playing the San Diego State Aztecs anywhere is a difficult task, playing them at home in front of their rowdy crowd proved to be way too much for the Runnin' Utes Tuesday.

The Utes, who lost 85-53, were affected by SDSU's crowd both Utah coach Jim Boylen and center David Foster said.

Shawn Glover scored the first bucket of the night, but the Utes fell behind quickly and trailed 28-9 with 11:32 left in the half.

"They are a very good team but I don't know if that means we can get off to that bad of a start, if that makes sense," Boylen said. "You want to give them credit but I think we had a lot to do with that too. We looked a little scared to be honest with you."

Few of the Utes have been in situations similar to Tuesday's, Boylen said while Foster said there was little he could do to help them prepare.

"Utah State is like that, BYU is like that," he said. "The tough thing is all the new guys not understanding and it's hard to convey to them what to expect. Sometimes they have to experience it and man up and take it for what it is worth."

The Utes were out-scored 50-30 in the paint and SDSU had 23 points off turnovers compared to none for the Utes.

All-in-all it was a horrendous night for the Utes, whose offense continues to slide for reasons that Boylen is unsure.

"I thought our opponents have been very good but I don't know why we aren't making free throws, why we aren't making layups or open shots," Boylen said. "I don't know why. I just keep evaluating and looking at it."
