Utah's gymnastics team is in full prep mode for its season opener, which is Jan. 7 against reigning champion and No. 1 preseason pick UCLA. Unfortunately, the No. 5 Utes are going into the season short-handed. Freshman Alyssa Gale is retiring due to a knee injury. Gale had surgery more than a year ago but the knee just hasn't healed enough to let her compete, Utah coach Greg Marsden said. "Any time she would do anything it would swell up," he said. "It was pretty obvious she needed to be done." Gale will remain with the team as a manager. Another freshman, Victoria Shanley, has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and is out for an undetermined amount of time. "We'd like to get her back sooner rather than later," Marsden said. "But it's going to be a little bit of a process to get her back into shape." There was some good news for Utah's gymnastics team as every team member made the Athletic Director's honor roll for the fall semester with a 3.0 or better GPA. The Utes also had 11 made the Dean's List, which requires a 3.5 GPA.
