Aggies showing off depth
Utah State coach Matt Wells is obviously disappointed the Aggies won't have the services of linebacker Alex Huerta this season after Huerta had surgery to repair his injured shoulder.
However, Wells said Huerta's absence is minimized thanks to the depth the Aggies have at linebacker.
"They're all interchangeable," he said following Saturday's scrimmage.
It seems that could be the theme for the Aggies this season. Utah State is showing a lot of depth at receiver, linebacker and running back positions so far in camp. The offensive line and secondary aren't quite as proven, but Wells like the talent their too.<
Joe Hill (4 carries, 59 yards) is solid as the starting running back, but others such as Rashad Hall (2 carries, 12 yards) and Tonny Lindsey (4 carries, 19 yards) are bringing some solid play to the field as well.
The receivers continue to be impressive, with Hunter Sharp (1 reception, 27 yards), JoJo Natson (5 receptions, 28 yards) and Shaan Johnson (4 receptions, 32 yards) all having a good effort in Saturday's scrimmage.
Even the tight end position has some depth, with Jefferson Court (2 receptions, 11 yards) and Wyatt Houston (2 receptions, 14 yards) now "1-A and 1-B," said assistant coach Luke Wells.
With two scrimmages behind them, the next task for the Aggies will be honing players' roles and ironing out that depth chart. It will be tough to do in some instances, but it's a good problem to have.
