Utah State continues to address its biggest concern for the 2014 season with the signing of Tyler Floyd, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound corner out of Orlando, Fla., who excelled at Fullerton College in California.
Floyd, who will have two years of eligibility, had 47 tackles, including 32 solo, during his sophomore year. He also had four blocked kicks, nine pass breakups and two interceptions to help his team to a 12-1 record.
Floyd earned second-team all-Central Conference honors in the Southern California Football Association for his efforts.
Floyd committed to the Aggies in January after entertaining offers from UAB, Georgia State and Houston.
He has an interesting background story as a torn ACL he suffered in high school heading into his junior year apparently made some programs hesitant to take a chance on him.
However, he is eager to prove those who doubted him wrong and he is expected to compete for playing time right away.
The Aggies lost four starters out of their defensive backfield in safety Maurice Alexander and corners Quinton Byrd, Tay Glover-Wright and Nevin Lawson, so they need guys like Floyd to step in and make an impact.
Floyd comes from a football family. His father played running back at FSU and was selected by San Diego in the 1989 NFL draft. He played in six games for the Chargers. Floyd's brother, V.J., was a running back for Southern Mississippi in 2009-10.
