Aggies continue to experiment with personnel

The Utah State Aggies continued to experiment with personnel changes Friday, moving junior linebacker La'Bradford Harold to running back.

The move was made on a day when coach Matt Wells was curt in his assessment of the running backs, noting they needed to produce more and hang onto the ball better.

"That isn't the way we play," he said of the turnovers.

As for Harold, the switch to running back was an eye-opening experience. His offensive efforts in high school were some minutes at receiver. He finished with 28 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns as a senior for Crowley H.S., in Texas.

"This is something new," he said Friday. "In high school you just run around making plays. This is different because in college you have to make reads and it will take some time."

The Aggies' other personnel experiment, moving running back Kelvin Lee to defensive back is going well, Wells said.

"He is picking it up real fast," he said.

Tight end Landon Horne had several nice catches on Friday while quarterback Darell Garretson earned a nod of approval from Wells for throwing the deep ball well.

With the Aggies now more than halfway through spring ball, Wells said the emphasis going forward would be working on the red zone defense, something linebacker Kyler Fackrell said needed to improve.

"We've made a lot of progress but we have a lot of youth," he said. "We have to have a lot of improvement before we start playing."
