A group of rising juniors who play on the same AAU club had a lot to celebrate on Monday evening.
The Utah State men's basketball team got a jump on the 2015 class by offering four players from Utah Prospects, one of the hottest AAU programs in the state this spring. In all, point guard Jesse Wade, combo guard Brock Miller, wing Zac Seljaas and forward Makol Mawien now have Aggies offers to mull over.
"This is offer No. 1 for me," said Wade, a 6-foot-1 guard from Davis High. "It's pretty exciting. It's great that all the hard work and the countless hours are starting to pay off."
The group has been making waves early on this spring, winning a tournament in Las Vegas and placing in others. Indivisible hoops recently ranked the 16U team as the No. 18 squad in the country.
Several of the players were at Utah State's team camp last weekend - Seljaas and his Bountiful squad took first place. But the Aggies staff let it be known they were interested last week, and sent out offers on Monday.
"I've been to one of their games, and the atmosphere is incredible," said Brock Miller, a Brighton guard who has two older brothers in DI programs. "The Mountain West conference is a good one to play in. All around, it seems like a solid program with good academics, too. That's going to be important for me."
For a few, this is the first offer before a rush comes in. Coaches will be able to start calling the recruits on Saturday, and all of them have some in-state and out-of-state interest.
Mawein, a 6-foot-8 shot swatter from Granger, was at the Under Armour Grind Session last weekend, and drew a lot of eyes as one of the top defensive players at the showcase. Seljaas, Wade and Miller all have been talking to BYU and Utah, and other schools such as Gonzaga and Boise State are interested in a few of them.
None are yet close to making a decision. But the Aggies are in the running, and being first can be a boost.
"It's just a blessing that teams are interested in me," Miller said. "I know I got quite a bit to live up to, but it's definitely exciting to get this offer."
