Hanging around Logan for most of the last month and a half, Matt Austin has been able to help the younger crop of Utah State receivers get better at spring practice.
But he's also been restless, looking for a chance to play himself.
"I'm ready for the wait to be over," he said. "I'm bored without football in my life. It's great to see my boys step up and play, but it makes me miss it that much more."
Austin, who led the Aggies in receptions and yards last year, isn't sure if he'll be taken in the NFL Draft, but he'll know a lot more about his future after this weekend. Whether he gets drafted, or whether he's looking for somewhere to latch on as a free agent, he's prepared.
Since pro day, Austin has worked out for the Raiders, the Dolphins, the Buccaneers, the Chiefs, the Giants and the Jets. He sees the Jaguars, the Cardinals or the Bucs as the teams that might give him a shot in the later rounds of the draft on day three. The Seahawks also interviewed him recently, which is intriguing because of former teammates Robert Turbin and Bobby Wagner on the roster.
"It was kind of cool, because I came up at the same time as those guys," Austin said. "But anywhere I go, whatever I have to do, I'm ready. I'm just going to kick back and wait to see if anybody wants to take a chance on me."
Austin answered some questions about his speed at Utah State Pro Day, and his hands and size are strengths. But teams would like to see Austin show a little more strength and explosion, he said, especially when breaking tackles and trying to drop his coverage. He's also been working on sharpening his routes and other elements of his technique.
One of a few Aggies who might get drafted this weekend, Austin said he's been feeling more nervous for Kerwynn Williams and Will Davis, who are projected to be taken in the draft. He's also feeling sympathetic anxiety for Al Lapuaho, Kellen Bartlett, Bojay Filimoeatu, Chuck Jacobs, and others in the hunt for a chance in the NFL this year.
"I'm always in those guys' ears," Austin said. "It's an exciting time. We want each other to succeed."
