Utah State football announces Luke Wells' hire
Utah State football has officially hired another member to its staff: Luke Wells.
Coach Matt Wells unsurprisingly is excited to bring on his younger brother as the Aggies' co-offensive coordinator, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for the 2013 season.
"Luke's background in the Big 12 Conference for the last four years, along with his familiarity with spread and no-huddle offenses, will be very beneficial here at Utah State," Matt Wells said in a school news release. "His background in recruiting Texas will be an integral part of our recruiting efforts and we are happy that he and his family are joining our Aggie football family."
Of course, Luke Wells is already in the "family," but his talents cultivated at Iowa State the last four years could be a boon as he joins the Aggies.
Wells comes to Logan from Ames, Iowa, where he served as tight ends coach after coaching receivers. He helped the Cyclones get to bowls in the past two seasons.
Before Iowa State, he was at Lousiana-Monroe on Charlie Weatherbie's staff, and served as receivers coach, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator for various stints. Wells was a quarterback at Oklahoma, where he also served as a graduate assistant.
It seems to be a big draw for Wells that the two brothers in the business can finally work together.
"Matt has a track record of being a great football coach and an outstanding recruiter and I'm ecstatic about coming to Utah State and working for my brother, which is something I've wanted to do for a long time and something we have talked about in the past," Luke Wells said in the release. "It's an incredible opportunity not only professionally, but personally as well."
Luke Wells is slated to work with previously hired offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven, a former Aggies assistant whose addition was announced on Friday. It's unclear exactly how their responsibilities will be split as co-coordinators, but it is certain that Utah State will continue a spread with many no-huddle calls that Matt Wells helped develop.
With Luke Wells' hire, there are only a handful of open spots left. Sources close to BYU and USU have confirmed to The Tribune that Cougars' coach Mark Weber will take the offensive line position. That still leaves defensive coordinator and running backs coach open.
