NBC's The Night Shift (9 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5) is a new medical drama that appears to have been constructed out of piece of old medical dramas. It's fairly skillfully put together, but it's filled with so many medical-drama cliches it's almost a medical comedy in spots. There's conflict galore. The doctors are in conflict with the hospital adminstrator. A patient threatens the emergency room receptionist. And our hero, Dr. T.C. Callahan (Eoin Macken) is a trouble veteran of the Afghan war who has an attitude problem, a gambling problem and a gorgeous body that he shows off in frequent shirtless scenes. You know, just what you expect from your emergency room doctor. Here's another surprise - Dr. House's boss ... er, uh, T.C.'s boss tries to get him to toe the line. There are indications the show really was built out of bits of medical-drama scripts from the '80s or '90s. Like - a gay character who refuses to come out? A "secret" romantic relationship between fellow staffers."The Night Shift" is clearly trying to be "ER." But it's not based on the early years of "ER" when the show revolved around the medical cases, it's based on the later years when "ER" was a big prime-time soap and the medical cases were B stories.Again, this isn't an awful show. But it's clearly one that NBC is dumping in the summer because it's not particularly good.Elsewhere on TV ...Stanley Cup playoffs (6 p.m., NBCSN): New York Rangers at Montreal CanadiensExtreme Weight Loss (7 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4): In the fourth-season premiere, a 310 hairdress and a 480-pound baseball player try to lose weight.America's Got Talent (7 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5): Ninth-season auditions begin.NBA playoffs (7 p.m., TNT): San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City ThunderThe World Wars (7 and 10 p.m., History): In Part 2 of this three-part series, WWI comes to an end but tensions build toward WWII.D-Day 360 (8 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7): This documentary uses modern technology to re-create what happened on June 6, 1944.I Wanna Marry Harry (8 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13): The women have to play cricket.Soccer (8 p.m., ESPN2): In an international friendly - a tune-up for the World Cup - the U.S Men's National Team takes on Azerbaijan in San Francisco.Celebrity Wife Swap (9 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4): Larry Birkhead and Helio Castroneves swap places.Frontline (9 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7): Inside the Ukrainian unrest and Syrian civil war.Fargo (11 p.m., FX): Malvo goes looking for answers.
