This weekend on TV: ‘Penny Dreadful’ is sort of a bloody mess

Showtime's Penny Dreadful (Sunday, 10 p.m.) is cool to look at, incredibly disgusting at times and sort of a mess if you take time to think about the plot. At least in the first couple of episodes, which were made available to critics.

It's sort of a Victorian "Avengers." Or maybe a gothic "Justice League." Or a horror version of "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."S

ir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) is at the center of this group that he seems to be gathering — a group that includes Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadway) and, in Episode 2, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney). In Sunday's premiere, Murray and Frankenstein investigate a series of gruesome murders.

It's very violent, very bloody, very disturbing … and, after two episodes, I'm not sure where this is headed.
