Wednesday on TV: A member of the "Modern Family" passes away in the season finale

Things get serious on the season finale of Modern Family (8 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) when Phil's mother dies. The family travels to Florida for the funeral.

Viewers never got to meet Phil's mom, although we've seen his dad multiple times. And Fred Willard returns tonight in that role.

This is one of TV's best comedies, and - not surprisingly - there are lots of laughs as well. Claire helps Phil with Gracie's last wish for Frank, and the kids reflect on the gifts grandma left for them. Gloria has to contend with an outstanding arrest warrant in Florida, Cam finds himself fitting right into an elderly women's group at Frank's retirement community, and Jay runs into a pivotal person from his past.
