There's sort of a weird feel to Battleground: Rhino Wars, a three-part series that debuts at 7 and 9 p.m. on Animal Planet.
It's a horrific look at what's happening to the rhinos, who are being hunted to extinction for their horns - which are believed to have some sort of magical quality in parts of Asia. And don't underestimage the word "horrific." There are scenes of maimed and killed animals that are tough to look at.
If any of this does anything to help the rhinos, more power to Animal Planet.
The premise of the show - four Americans who are former members of the U.S. special forces go to South Africa to help protect the rhinos - is more problematic. It's not really clear in the premiere who brought them there, but it smacks of old-time colonialism. Which is not a great message.
